Business trip to Sylva, part II (Tuesday)

Happy Valentine's Day!

We walked to story time at the library in Sylva, and both kids received valentines from Piper, the only other child at story time.  I was glad we went so she had some recipients for her lovely valentines.

Later, Crusoe took a nap in his pack-n-play.

Finn & Crusoe enjoyed some more play time in our hotel room.  Finn loved the mini-fridge in our room and spoke of it like it was hers, since it more closely resembled her toy fridge in size than it did our big refrigerator.  "Similar to refrigerator at home. Not same, similar."

It astounds me how much and how quickly she is learning, even subtle things, like the difference between 'same' and 'similar'.  For a long time, she has said 'same' when she notices utensils or toys or clothes or cars that look the same.  Last week she pointed out that a yellow spoon and a yellow fork were "same" so we introduced the concept of similar, but I didn't expect her to use it right away.

We didn't have reservations for Valentine's night dinner, but fortunately we were early enough at City Lights Cafe that they allowed us to eat, so long as we were out by 7pm, when the live music started.  Fortunately for us, the musicians started at 6:30 and our table was right next to the stage, so we enjoyed some jazz before we had to go.

Two women were sitting at a table near us, and our server mistakenly brought to us the champagne they had ordered.  I took a sip, realized what it was, and we told our server.  The two women saw what happened, laughed, and said, 'We all look the same, right?'  She had a point:  all four of us were wearing comfortable shoes, trendy androgynous clothes, had short brown hair, and I was the only one without glasses.

For the second time in two nights, fellow diners commented on how well-behaved our children were at dinner.  At the spaghetti restaurant (last night), a woman told us that she and her husband had been watching us throughout the meal, amazed at how quiet and polite our kids are, and that she had not seen kids that well-behaved in years.  Thank you!  And it was especially nice to hear that compliment again on Valentine's Day, when the stakes are higher for a romantic evening.

 Finn did a little panhandling.
After we left City Lights Cafe, we searched for dessert elsewhere, and found Mexican chocolate cake and strawberry-apple cobbler at Guadalupe Cafe, where they also had live old time country music.

Crusoe wanted to get an alternative perspective of the band.
All that, and we still made it back to our room by 8pm.  Then we took advantage of our HBO access and watched "The Loving Story" about Mildred and Richard Loving, whose Supreme Court case in 1967, Loving v. Virginia, overturned state laws against interracial marriage.  It's a beautiful story, and with a name like 'Loving' they were destined to win their court case.  I predict that by June 12, 2017, the 50th anniversary of their case, the Supreme Court will again rule to support marriage equality.... for gays and lesbians.  It was a wonderful Valentine's Day, and we also celebrated 13 years together!
