To those of you out there who think there is no longer discrimination based on sexual orientation, we are here to tell you (with heavy hearts) that prejudice and bigotry are alive and well in North Carolina.
Despite a strong state-wide campaign against Amendment One (and our personal letters to the editor in local newspapers), this measure passed, writing discrimination into our state constitution by recognizing marriage between one man and one woman as the only "domestic legal union" in the state.
Not since 1875 (when interracial marriages were banned by constitutional amendment) has an amendment in NC taken away people's rights rather than granted them. We are concerned especially for our kids, who could be directly affected by this hateful and misguided legislation, but we have hope and trust that by the time they reach adulthood, more acceptance and understanding will prevail, and gay folks like us will have won our well-deserved civil rights.
